Sacred Storm Buffalo

Sacred Storm Buffalo is a workforce development social enterprise dedicated to empowering communities through the art of meat processing united through the Hochoka Kin Holding LLC, the three nonprofits of Wambli Ska Society operating as Sacred Storm Buffalo, Makoce Agriculture Development, and Tanka Fund. The harvesting of buffalo provides sustenance and fosters food sovereignty for the people, weaving a vital thread of resilience and empowerment into the fabric of the community. NDN Fund’s $1,600,000 Regenerative Agriculture/Landback loan to Sacred Storm Buffalo will allow them to purchase a plant and harvest truck from Wild Idea Buffalo Company in Rapid City, South Dakota. NDN Fund is proud to partner with Sacred Storm Buffalo and their mission to foster food sovereignty, family well-being, a sustainable future, and reconnection to the land.

The vision at Sacred Storm Buffalo is to create a sustainable future where every individual cherishes their connection to the land and the nourishment it provides. Sacred Storm Buffalo strives to be a beacon of cultural preservation, education, and empowerment, fostering a world where everyone can access healthy, culturally relevant food choices. Through its commitment to excellence in meat processing, apprenticeship programs, and advocacy for food sovereignty, Sacred Storm Buffalo envisions a society where harmony between humans and the Earth is restored, one meal at a time.

Upon loan closing on April 26th, 2024, Sacred Storm Buffalo moved quickly to train staff and obtain certification to begin meat distribution in September 2024. Initial plans include harvesting and distributing 20,000 pounds of buffalo each month to local Oglala Sioux Tribe residents. Through our Power Building, NDN Fund will assist Sacred Storm Buffalo in developing its website to increase its visibility and impact.
