Dr. Valeriah Big Eagle

Director of He Sapa Initiatives

Dr. Valeriah Big Eagle (she/they) is Ihanktonwan Nakota/Hunkpati Dakota. She believes that the community knows what it needs and strives to bridge communication gaps and empower her community. Her previous roles include building and administering an Indigenous professional mentoring program, advocating for Indigenous students in public schools and the university system, and consulting for Indigenous nonprofits.

Dr. Big Eagle’s education journey began with a Baccalaureate in Sociology and a Master of Education from South Dakota State University. She then went on to earn her Doctor of Education in Education Leadership from the University of South Dakota, specializing in Adult and Higher Education administration. Her academic path was guided by her strong spirituality and connection to culture.
She has been recognized for her work, including receiving the “40 Under 40” Award from Prairie Business Magazine, the F.O. Butler in Excellence for Community Service Award, and serving as a 2020 Bush Fellow. She has also participated in leadership programs such as Leadership South Dakota, Native Nation Rebuilders, Rapid City Collective Impact Emerging Leaders, and Leadership Rapid City. Additionally, she has run for political office in her local district.
Dr. Big Eagle is a board member of He Sapa Otipi and Oaye Luta Okolakiciye.
