NDN Collective to Host HeARTbeat of Turtle Island, A Free Art Exhibit and Immersive Event

Chicago, IL – On Sunday, October 6, NDN Collective will host the “HeARTbeat of Turtle Island” art exhibit and event as part of the 2024 Grantmakers in the Arts Conference. The free event will feature 10 Radical Imagination artists from across Turtle Island (North America) and the Island Nation of Hawai’i, including:

  • Josué Rivas (Mexica and Otomí)
  • Miguel Ventura (Maya)
  • Hubert Martinez Calleja (Mè’phàà (Tlapaneco))
  • Caesar Hernández Andres (Ngigua & Chocholteco)
  • Larry McNeil (Tlingit & Nisgáa)
  • Hāwane Rios (Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian))
  • Marques Marzan (Kanaka Hawai‘i)
  • Gabriela Spears Rico (Pirinda & P’urhepecha)
  • Daniel Cespedes (Chamoru)
  • Chad Martin (Kanaka Maoli & Hawaiian)

Attendees will have the opportunity to experience the powerful work of Indigenous visual artists, filmmakers, musicians, poets, and culture bearers, through presentations, performances with both traditional and contemporary art shares.

HeARTbeat of Turtle Island will take place from 1:00-6:00 pm CT at the American Indian Center of Chicago.

“We invite the community to join us as we celebrate the powerful creativity of Indigenous artists from across Turtle Island, featuring artist talks, a gallery opening and a community concert,” said Serene Lawrence, Program Office for NDN Collective grants. 

“These 10 amazing artists have dedicated their creativity, imagination, and heart to building a vision of our collective future,” said Helen Aldana, Program Officer for NDN Collective grants. “We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with them this last year and now for the community of Chicago and beyond to experience these artists’ radical imagination through music, photographs, films, and so much more.”
