Renewal

March 2026 Newsletter

Dear Relatives,

As we greet springtime on Turtle Island, and the birds begin to sing as snow transforms into flowing streams, we take inspiration from the lessons that water offers to us about renewal. In her writings about water as a teacher, Nishnaabeg Author Leanne Betasamosake Simpson asks us, “How do we renew ourselves? How do we renew our communities? How do we create life that brings forth more life rather than ending it?”

Here at NDN Collective, the start of spring brought a renewal to our spirits, both in big, collective moments, like when the politically motivated charges against our CEO and Founder were dropped, and in quiet, solitary moments, like the offerings made to welcome spring back to the land in a good way. We also welcomed our new cohort of Radical Imagination Artists and are excited to support these storytellers, truth-tellers, and visionaries who help our communities see beyond colonial limits and envision a pathway to another world.

These wins, rituals, and reminders renew us for the collective fights that we see on the path ahead. One such fight is Pe’Sla, a sacred site where mining companies threaten to drill. The US Forest Service issued a permit for this desecration that threatens not only the land but the watershed as well. It is in these times that we are called into reciprocity, to defend the land and water that provide us and future generations with life.

In Solidarity & Strength,
The NDN Collective Team

Pe’Sla Needs Our Protection: Help Us Save this Sacred Site from Illegal Drilling

I invite you to pause for a moment and think about the most sacred place you know. Maybe it is a church, synagogue, temple, or mosque. Perhaps it is a river, a mountain, or a small altar in your home. Take a breath and reflect on how that place holds you—how it grounds your spirit, offers healing, and welcomes you into relationship with others.

Collective Abundance Spotlight: Lisa White Bull

Lisa White Bull (Oglala Sioux Tribe) is a Collective Abundance Fund Year 2 Awardee who had a dream of transforming her home into a gathering place for community members to harvest medicines. Driven by a vision of reciprocity and abundance, she used the award to build greenhouses and steward the land to be suitable for growing traditional plants. Throughout the process, she also transformed her relationship to money and is now inspired to support other women navigating financial hardship. Lisa shared that beyond financial support of the Collective Abundance Fund, the greatest gift of the experience has been empowerment and affirmation. She now feels worthy of living her dream, a dream that includes stewarding her land so medicines can grow, creating space for prayer, play, balance (wicozani), and embodying an Indigenous understanding of wealth grounded in generosity and healing.

Protect Pe’Sla!

Call the Forest Service at (605) 343-1567 to demand they rescind the permit for Pe’Sla drilling and the decision to grant a Categorical Exclusion (CE) for their exploratory drilling permit. They have no right to violate treaty rights, declare Indigenous culture an acceptable loss, cut us out of the process, or endanger the drinking water of thousands of people and Ellsworth Air Force Base.
