NDN Collective is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that builds the power of Indigenous Peoples, Communities, and Nations to exercise our inherent right to self-determination, while fostering a world that is built on a foundation of justice.

Summary:
The Director of Finance contributes to NDN Collective’s overall success of the organization by effectively managing all financial activities for the organization. In addition, the position provides support to directors in the implementation and presentation of information vital to making data-based decisions for the organization.

Who We Are

NDN Collective is an ambitious, systemic effort to empower Indigenous communities. We are creating a paradigm change in how society invests in Indigenous Peoples by scaling up investment and shifting decision-making power to Indigenous Peoples. We are doing four key things to create a new ecosystem that supports Indigenous self-determination:

  1. We are dramatically increasing philanthropic investment into Indigenous-led organizations, with the goal of giving out $50M per year in grants by 2020.
  2. We are creating an Indigenous-led Community Development Financial Institution to move $100M of for-profit investment into projects led by and serving Indigenous communities.
  3. We are building capacity in Indigenous communities to be able to absorb this new influx of capital.
  4. We are advocating for Indigenous rights and policy changes that will enable our peoples and communities to thrive.

The Position

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Finance will build and manage the Finance Team, including working with and managing consultants.  The Director of Finance performs a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:

Financial accounting and reporting

  • Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the users and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all statutory requirements of the organization are met.
  • Prepare all supporting information for the annual audit and liaise with the external auditors as necessary.
  • Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions.
  • Develop and maintain financial accounting systems for cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit control, and petty cash.
  • Reconcile bank and investment accounts.
  • Review monthly results and implement monthly variance reporting.
  • Manage the cash flow and prepare cash flow forecasts in accordance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the bookkeeping function including maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure that personnel and financial information is secure and stored in compliance with current legislation.
  • Manage the acquisition of capital assets and ensure that assets are properly recorded, amortized, and disposed of as appropriate.
  • Assist the President & CEO and the Board Treasurer with financial reporting as required at Board meetings.

Financial accounting and reporting

  • Oversee all payroll functions to ensure that employees are paid in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Negotiate and manage the employee insurance and benefits plans.
  • Process and submit statutory and benefits remittances on time.
  • Issue annual reports.

Budget preparation

  • Establish guidelines for budget and forecast preparation, and prepare the annual budget in consultation with the President & CEO and Board Treasurer.
  • Assist Director of Advancement and other staff with the preparation of budgets for funding applications.

Project management accounting

  • Maintain financial records for each project in a manner that facilitates management reports.
  • Ensure that accurate and timely financial statements are prepared in accordance with contract agreements with funders. 
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting on the financial activity of individual projects and/or divisions of NDN Collective.

Information technology

  • Evaluate the need for new technology to meet the organization’s financial data processing, control, and reporting requirements.
  • Advise on appropriate technology that meets the organization’s information requirements and financial resources. 

Risk management

  • Monitor risk management policies and procedures to ensure that program and organizational risks are minimized.
  • Advise the organization’s leadership on appropriate insurance coverage for the organization and the Board of Directors.
  • Maximize income where possible and appropriate.
  • Negotiate with credit union for lines of credit or other financial services as required and appropriate.

Who You Are

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, economics, finance, business management/administration, or a related field is required.
  • Three to five years of progressive financial responsibility.
  • Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge

  • Generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Federal and state legislation affecting nonprofits.
  • Nonprofit sector and nonprofit accounting.
  • Operations and services of finance and accounting.
  • Terminology and practices of financial and account document processing and recordkeeping, including accounts receivable and accounts payable.
  • Business mathematics and financial and statistical techniques.
  • Principles and practices of providing a high level of customer service.
  • Principles and practices of recordkeeping.
  • Relevant occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Modern office practices and methods related to the work.

Personal Characteristics

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication abilities and experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and accounting, ideally in the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people and systems.
  • Flexible and a self-starter; able to manage multiple deadlines and be highly detail-oriented.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to NDN Collective’s mission.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a collaborative team member.
  • Ability to supervise and highly performing team.
